What are PFAS?

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) comprise several thousand chemical substances that are water-, grease- and oil-repellent and very thermally stable. This is why they are found in many everyday products, from non-stick coatings and impregnations to outdoor textiles.

As PFAS are hardly degradable and can accumulate in the environment, drinking water, food and the human body, they are considered to be forever chemicals. Many of these substances are now under close scrutiny and are gradually being regulated.

Our path to products without the deliberate use of PFAS

As an eighth-generation family business, the Schöffel Group bears a special responsibility towards people, nature and future generations.

That is why we have been developing our products for many years in such a way that they do not require the active use of PFAS. Today, we exclusively use C0-DWR (Durable Water Repellent). This is a water-repellent finish that is produced without PFAS-containing compounds.

Since the 2020 summer collection, the Schöffel Group has banned the use of PFAS, thus promoting the development of products without the deliberate use of PFAS at an early stage.

How the challenge is being tackled

Even though Schöffel does not use PFAS, unintended trace contamination can occur along complex global supply chains. This contamination is always below legal limits and arises, for example, from minimal cross-contamination, such as via process water.

To further minimise these risks, Schöffel is in close contact with its suppliers and relies on comprehensive pollutant management with regular, independent testing processes. This ensures that high standards are maintained at all times.

How to care for your water-repellent products

To ensure that the water-repellent function is maintained in the long term, regular care is recommended, in particular reactivating and, if necessary, re-impregnating the DWR finish. Click here for care instructions.
