PERFECTLY EQUIPPED LAYER BY LAYER

Layering system: The perfect double layer for skiing

As soon as the days get colder, it's time to layer. Even when skiing! The Schöffel Layering System was developed together with professional skier Felix Neureuther to provide you with the perfect clothing throughout the ski season. No matter what the conditions, our Schöffel Layering System offers you unsurpassed performance on the slopes all season long.

The onion principle in skiing: Your ski outfit for every weather and every skiing style

The ski season in the Alps starts in October and ends - if the snow is good - around Easter. During this period, snow is always the basis for your skiing adventure, but apart from that, the weather conditions can vary greatly. Even within a ski holiday or even within a day, the weather can vary greatly. So how can you dress appropriately for the changing conditions? The keyword is quite clear: layering! With several layers pulled on top of each other, you can dress and undress quickly should the weather change. The Schöffel Layering System is designed to cope with changing conditions as well as your different activity levels. With a wide range of products that complement each other and can be individually layered, Schöffel offers you an optimal body climate with maximum freedom of movement.

Layering: These layers are part of the ski onion look

The ski onion look is made up of three to five layers:

  • Base layer (Base 1 and 2)
  • Insulation layer (Insulation 1 and 2)
  • Outer layer (shell)

The perfect interplay of the individual layers is crucial in layering. That's why we at Schöffel have designed each layer so that it functions both individually and as part of an overall system. To achieve this, we have optimised ventilation channels, features and fits in each layer so that your outfit is ultimately tailored exactly to your activity.

Your guarantee for comfort and movement

The Base Layer

The bottom layer of the layering principle is the base layer, which is also known as functional underwear or thermal underwear. The base layer is worn directly on the skin and serves to warm the body, wick away moisture and keep the skin dry. The ski underwear thus contributes optimally to regulating the body climate. Since the base layer serves as the first layer of insulation, it is made from fabrics such as merino. By trapping small amounts of air between the wool fibres, it provides pleasant warmth.

In addition to the functional underwear, a longsleeve should be worn over the base layer. This ensures a pleasantly dry feeling even with high moisture transport. In any case, Schöffel underwear offers you unrestricted freedom of movement and can even help you improve your performance.

This is what you should look for in a base layer:

Basically, your base layer should fit closely to your body and be breathable. Depending on the temperature or season, you decide whether your base layer consists of long or short clothing. In other words, you can choose whether your first layering layer is short or long. Longsleeves that fit close to the skin are also very suitable here. In very cold temperatures you have the option of wearing functional underwear as a base layer and a longsleeve on top of it.

The important thing is that the base layer is mandatory!

The insulation layer

The insulation layer is worn over the base layer and - as the name suggests - provides additional insulation. Its function is to store heat and protect the body from the cold by insulating the air between the layers. The most important features of the insulation layer are heat retention, breathability, compressibility and light weight. Materials such as down, PrimaLoft® or fleece are used for insulation clothing.

The insulation layer is also divided into two separate layers, which can be used individually or in combination depending on the weather and cold. On warmer days, it is advisable to wear only one insulation layer consisting of a fleece to avoid overheating. When temperatures are very low, however, the second insulation layer should be worn in addition to the first insulation layer of fleece. This second layer consists of an insulation jacket made of a material such as down or PrimaLoft® to keep the body warm even in the most adverse conditions.

This is what you should pay attention to with Insulation Layer 1 and 2:

Which ski clothing you wear with your insulation layer depends on the outside temperatures and your individual feeling of warmth. Light fleece or softshell jackets with wind- and water-repellent properties are very popular here. In not too cold temperatures, a softshell jacket can also be worn well as an outer layer. In very cold temperatures, the insulation layer should be made of down or synthetic fibre. So again, you can decide individually which material you want to use.

Tip: On very cold days it is recommended to combine insulation layers 1 and 2 to keep your body warm. For this, a fleece jacket should be worn as insulation layer 1 and a down jacket as insulation layer 2 on top.

Your barrier against wind and weather

The outer layer (shell)

The outermost layer in the Schöffel layering system is a hardshell jacket. This top layer is waterproof and windproof so that the elements can't harm you. No matter what the weather and regardless of how cold you feel. In addition, air circulation takes place, sweat is effectively wicked away and ensures that moisture does not accumulate. This is made possible by waterproof and breathable membranes as well as intelligent design with features such as a snow guard. The hardshell jacket should also fit comfortably over the previous layers, consisting of base layer and insulation layer, so that optimal freedom of movement is guaranteed. To be found more quickly in emergency situations, the jacket is equipped with RECCO® reflectors. You can also find more information in the blog for your safety on the mountain.

This is what you should pay attention to with the outer layer:

The outer layer should shield you from all weather influences. Whether rain, snow, sun or wind - the outer layer shields you perfectly. The last layer is also breathable and transports excess heat and moisture to the outside. Hardshell jackets are particularly suitable here. Tip: Before using your jacket, you should have it impregnated with a suitable product.

Important: The shell outer layer is compulsory so that you are well equipped for wind and moisture.

FAQs about the Schöffel Layering System

In our detailed FAQ section you will find all the important questions about the Schöffel Layering System, so that you can start your next Ich bin raus- ski adventure in the best possible way!

Moisture-wicking and breathable materials that wick sweat away from the skin and keep it dry are suitable for the base layer. Functional underwear made of natural or synthetic fibres are particularly recommended here. Polyester, polypropylene or merino wool are often used.

The insulation layer, as you already know, is for warmth. Insulation materials such as PrimaLoft® or down are popular here.

For the outer layer, it is important to choose materials that are primarily windproof and waterproof. GORE-TEX® is very suitable as a material for outerwear. In principle, softshell materials can also be used. These are less waterproof but offer more freedom of movement and breathability. A softshell jacket is therefore very suitable for dry conditions.

In order to get the most out of your onion principle when skiing, you should make sure that you wear the individual layers correctly. This means: start with the base layer, followed by the insulation layer and then the outer layer (shell). You therefore go from tight-fitting to loose-fitting. With these further tips you can use the Schöffel layering system correctly:

  • Make sure your ski clothing is not too tight so as not to impair circulation, but also not too loose so as not to let the warmth escape.
  • Pay attention to thermal insulation in areas that are particularly vulnerable to cold, such as hands, feet and head. Wear appropriate gloves, socks and a hat.
  • In extremely cold conditions, an extra layer may be useful, such as a light down jacket under your ski jacket.
  • Wear moisture-wicking underwear and socks to keep moisture away from the skin and thus minimise the risk of hypothermia.
  • The great advantage of layering is that you can undress and dress as needed. Take advantage of this too! If it gets warmer during the activity, you can take off a layer to avoid overheating - if you get cold, you can put a layer back on.

The twill look affects thermoregulation by providing an effective way to adapt to changing temperatures. By wearing multiple layers, you trap air between the layers, which increases insulation and better retains body heat. In addition, the two-piece look allows you to flexibly adapt to different activity levels and weather conditions, as you can add or remove layers as needed - depending on how cold you feel.

When choosing a size for your skiwear for the layering look, you should consider the following points:

  1. fit: the clothes should neither be too tight nor too loose. You should be able to move freely and your circulation should not be impaired. Clothing that is too loose can reduce insulation efficiency.
  2. layers: In order to layer your clothing, keep in mind that the lower layers should not be too bulky so that the outer layer still fits over the base layer and the insulation layer.
  3. freedom of movement: your ski clothing and the individual layers must not restrict your movement. After all, skiing requires a lot of movement.

You can choose all the layers of your layering outfit in your usual clothing size. The layering system was designed so that all layers are optimally matched to each other - both functionally and in terms of size.

Our Ski Oufit Finder helps you find the right ski clothing for each layer. Here you will find clothing for the base layer, the insulation layer and the outer layer. Depending on your needs, you can also extend the layers and add fleece jackets or down waistcoats as additional warmth guarantors. The choice of the right ski clothing for each layer is based on the respective function of the layer. Basically, your ski clothing should be comfortable and keep you warm and dry.

Make sure you have the right ski clothing for every weather condition. Equip your ski outfit with other gadgets such as sunglasses, ski goggles and gloves. Schöffel ski clothing is extremely functional and therefore suitable for all weather conditions. Stay flexible and always adapt your layering look to the weather conditions, because only then can you enjoy your ski adventure to the full.

Basically, you should be careful with the care and cleaning of your functional clothing so that you can enjoy it for a long time. You can read about how to wash and care for your ski clothing in the appropriate article.
