What is AIRMEM™?

Like S.Café®, AIRMEM™ is based on coffee grounds, supposedly a waste product that is left over when coffee is made from beans. In the first step, coffee oil is obtained from this residue. This recycled resource can then be used not only as usual by the cosmetics industry, but is also the basis for the production of the lightweight membrane. And replaces 25% of the usual raw material, petroleum. AIRMEM™ combines advanced material technology with more environmentally-friendly manufacturing.

What does AIRMEM™ mean for the consumer?

The AIRMEM® membrane makes textiles windproof and water-proof. The excellent level of breathability supports moisture transport and leaves the skin feeling pleasantly dry. The combination of the underlying S.Café® technology and this special membrane can absorb and inhibit odours twice as well as conventional variants. So users can look forward to a fresh, pleasant wear experience.

What is 4D BODY MAPPING? 

4D BODY MAPPING is a flexible design principle that is based on body zones, types of sport, activity levels and the weather conditions. Depending on what is required of the Schöffel product, all four user benefits (weather protection, moisture management, freedom of movement and user focus) or only some of the 4D BODY MAPPING aspects may be applied. So this special garment always consists of an ever-new mix of materials and technologies that stores heat in some areas, releases moisture optimally, and combines the ideal freedom of movement with perfect weather protection. Schöffel uses a novel alternative to thermal insulation in the innovative, technical material comfortemp® Fiberball Padding manufactured by Freudenberg Performance Materials, and in doing so is taking a further step towards sustainable textiles. The recycling-based padding replaces conventional down, and is used as a warming intermediate layer for sports and functional textiles. The excellent performance of this new dimension in thermal insulation provides athletes with fabulous support in their outdoor activities.

What is comfortemp® Fiberball Padding?

This synthetic material consists of a large number of tiny contiguous fiber balls. Air inclusions are created by the special core structure, which results in high, constant thermal insulation and the optimum breathability. And although the wear feeling is the same as that of real down, this material does not clump.  Sustainability and animal welfare also play an important role in the production of this padding, because it is an innovative hi-tech alternative to down. The fiber balls are made 100% of recycled PET bottles, which means that a total recycled content of 70% is achieved after the addition of further binding fibers. 

What does comfortemp® Fiberball Padding mean for the consumer?

This innovative high-tech insulating material is used as a replacement for conventional down, and offers a very pleasant, fluffy, soft wear feeling. At the same time, textiles made of this ecologically valuable padding provide the optimum performance and support wearers in their sporting activities. In addition to the excellent insulating properties, they also offer the highest breathability. The cotton padding has the optimum bulkiness and is resistant to clumping and fiber migration. No lumps occur after washing that could lead to cold spots, so the wearer is kept perfectly warm at all times.

Schöffel uses three of five different product variants to adapt functional mountain sports clothing to a wide range of weather conditions: the classic Dermizax®; the specialised Dermizax® EV, and Dermizax® NX.

What is Dermizax®?

All Dermizax® modifications are based on a high-tech PU (polyurethane) membrane. The stretchy membrane is non-porous and hydrophilic, which reduces pore blockages from sweat particles, dirt or detergent residues. This efficient membrane structure results in high breathability even with longer and intensive movements, because moisture escapes via the molecular structure of the PU rather than through the pores, as is usually the case. Furthermore, this construction also contributes to long-lasting functionality even with years of and frequent use. The two specialisations NX and EV are variations of this all-round material that were developed for special weather conditions.

Dermizax® EV redefines the term comfort for performance fabrics. In addition to the characteristics of the classic membrane, this hard-wearing material also offers improved windproofness for particularly stormy weather conditions.

Dermizax® NX is notable for having an even thinner membrane for even higher breathability than Dermizax® EV. This means improved moisture wicking, as it is is transported away even more rapidly. The results is an extremely pleasant wear feeling in humid conditions.

What is Dermizax™ EV?  

Dermizax™ EV is based on a highly technical, stretchy membrane. It is non-porous and hydrophilic, which reduces the blockage of pores by sweat or dirt. The membrane structure of Dermizax™ EV produces a high level of breathability even in prolonged and intensive movement. This is because the moisture does not escape via the pores, as is usually the case, but via the molecular structure of the membrane. Dermizax™ EV redefines the concept of comfort in performance fabrics. In addition to the characteristics of the classic membrane, this hard-wearing material also offers improved windproofness for particularly stormy weather conditions.

What is Dermizax® NX?

Dermizax® NX is based on an extremely thin non-porous and high-tech hydrophilic (water-loving) PU (polyurethane) membrane. This is a new development at molecular level, since the binding of the hydrophilic PU molecules is precisely controlled and arranged in a highly functional 3D structure. This new technology enhances the diffusion of water vapor molecules, which leads to an extreme increase in the transmission rate and with that to greater breathability. In addition, the non-porous construction of the stretchy membrane ensures the reduction of blockages from sweat particles, dirt or detergent residues. Even during long and intensive activities, Dermizax® NX remains highly breathable, as the moisture is able to escape faster via the microporous structure rather than, as is usually the case, via pores. This results in an extremely comfortable wear feeling in humid conditions. The construction also contributes to long-lasting functionality even with prolonged and frequent use.

Down is light, yet warming at the same time, which is what makes it so popular for outdoor products. High quality and RDS certification are essential for Schöffel. It is so popular as an insulation material because it is unbelievably light and packs down very small, which makes it perfect for Schöffel outdoor products.

What is down?

Down refers to the fine feathers found under a bird's tougher exterior feathers. They are also known as down feathers. Elastic in structure, they are made up of countless very fine barbules. They are excellent at including air, and therefore perfect at storing body heat.

When using animal products, Schöffel is careful to ensure that no animals have suffered in their production. Schöffel only uses white and grey down and feathers from geese and ducks from RDS-certified sources. This rules out any likelihood of the material originating from a farm where the animals are force fed and live plucked. As a company, Schöffel attaches particular importance to animal welfare and now, by committing to RESPONSIBLE DOWN STANDARD (RDS) company certification, has taken a further step towards the responsible sourcing of down. This includes the supply chain, which means that only down from animal welfare-friendly farming is used for its products, starting with the animal farm and continuing all the way through to the actual processing of the down.

What does down mean for the consumer?

The best heat output in relation to the low weight and volume – that’s something wearers of Schöffel down products can rely on. In cold outdoor experiences in particular, the lightness coupled with excellent heat regulation is excellent. Plus the products are supple, soft and highly compressible. Thanks to the high breathability, wearers can also enjoy a pleasant body temperature. Furthermore, consumers of Schöffel products have the assurance of RDS certification, which means that the down and feathers in their products come from appropriately husbanded animals. All of the points in the product's supply chain comply with the RDS standard. Be it the breeding of the animals on the farm, their transportation or slaughter, only if 100% of the criteria and guidelines are fulfilled will the product receive the status of RDS certification and be used by Schöffel.

T8 Tech meets eco-friendliness – and the result is a new technology: EcoCosy®. This combination is unique, and plays an important part in the use of more sustainable materials. Thanks to the high elasticity of the yarn without elastane and the environmentally-friendly encasing, EcoCosy® is ideal for the high-quality products manufactured by Schöffel.

What is EcoCosy®? 

EcoCosy® is the eco-friendly further development of T8 Tech. T8 Tech consists of billions of tiny fibres that look like a coil. The fibre has a unique micro construction like a screw spring. This creates tiny turns and makes the T8 Tech material highly stretchy without the addition of elastane. For EcoCosy®, the fibre is now encased in a wood cellulose fibre that results in a soft, pleasant feel. These wood cellulose fibres are obtained from responsibly managed, certified wood plantations.

What does EcoCosy® mean for the consumer?

Schöffel products with EcoCosy® offer unbelievable freedom of movement without elastane and are environmentally friendly as well. Toray Industries, a leading supplier of innovative materials, has introduced a new product called ecodear™. This technology has the potential to make outdoor materials even more environmentally friendly and is therefore ideally suited to Schöffel's high-quality products.

What is ecodear™?

ecodear™ is a bio-based nylon made from castor oil. It is therefore a new material that is made from plant-based raw materials and yet offers the same durability and performance as conventional materials. The bio-based nylon is an important step in environmental protection. For this purpose, non-edible beans are spun together with petroleum to create environmentally friendly bio-nylon. A wide variety of outdoor products can be made from this material.

What does ecodear™ mean for consumers?

ecodear™ offers consumers an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional nylon materials. As it is plant-based, it reduces the use of fossil raw materials in production. In addition, Schöffel products with ecodear™ are water-repellent and offer super comfort. The plant-based organic nylon is therefore a real alternative to conventional nylon.

For optimum comfort in cycling, Schöffel relies on the Italian premium manufacturer Elastic Interface®. The anatomically moulded foam layers of the cycling pants offer targeted support through different densities and are absolutely breathable. The open cell structure ensures ideal air circulation and a pleasant feeling on the skin, even on long rides. nce.

Schöffel's fleece products are functional garments that are perfect for wearing as lightweight warming layers for sporting activities in summer and in winter. These textiles, which have a high thermal rating for their low weight, also appeal for everyday wear and in all kinds of leisure activities. Schöffel uses various kinds of fleece that are suitable for a wide range of weather conditions, and so is able to offer the right product for any area of use.

What is fleece?

Fleece is a knitted fabric with a soft, roughened surface. Tiny yarn loops are created in the production of knitted fabric that are cut open and roughened to create the soft, cosy structure. The higher the surface weight of the material in grams per square metre, the higher the thermal rating of the clothing. The weight generally ranges from 100 to 300 grams, which means we can distinguish between different weight classes of fleece variants.

Micro Fleece is the version with a grammage of up to 210 g/m². It is the perfect year-round companion, and can also be worn directly against the skin as a comfort layer. Along with all the usual characteristics, it is particularly thin and light, and packs down small.

Another modification is Medium Fleece, which has a grammage of between 210 and 300 g/m². This achieves a higher thermal rating. The fabric is the perfect midlayer for lower temperatures.

With its grammage of at least 300 g/m² or more, Super Warm Fleece provides a pleasant warmth when it is really cold in winter or in the high mountains.

Very special comfort thanks to the high elasticity is provided by the version Stretch Fleece. It combines the characteristics of fleece and stretch, and so can even be used for close-fitting cuts with maximum function.

What does Fleece mean for the consumer?

Wearers of fleece products have the benefit of extremely soft, warm, cosy materials combined with reliable functions. Moisture is transported away from the body to the outside, which is why the fabric dries quickly. Thanks to the dense fibre structure, fleece also has a certain water-repellent property. Breathability is still retained. These durable, resistant textiles also offer the optimum thermal insulation, and so protect against cooling down. At the same time, fleece clothing offers an excellent level of wear comfort and feels pleasant against the skin thanks to the cosy, shape-retaining material.

Wool has an excellent reputation as a natural functional material. It offers terrific thermal regulation even when wet. The natural material is of extremely high quality and optimally supports wearers in their outdoor experiences. When using animal fibers, Schöffel takes the greatest care to ensure that no animals have suffered in their production.

What is wool?

According to the Textile Labeling Act, wool is the soft fleece of a sheep or lamb. Like down, wool is fabulous for regulating heat, which makes it ideal as an insulating material. The wool fibers are curly. Air is trapped in the gaps between the curls, which in turn provides warmth. These air chambers also prevent cold from penetrating from the outside and ensure that moisture is transported away quickly. Furthermore, wool is impervious to moisture, and can in fact absorb it to a high degree to leave the skin feeling dry.

What does wool mean for the consumer?

Maximum wear comfort – that is what wearers of Schöffel wool products can expect. Animal welfare is the main consideration with the wool used for these products. The company only uses wool that does not come from farms that practice mulesing. Mulesing is a method in which a skin fold is removed from below the sheep's tail (usually without anesthesia) to prevent maggots from settling there. Schöffel's wool products also offer excellent heat regulation, which means they keep the wearer warm in cold weather and cool in warm weather. They are also odorless and quick-drying thanks to the natural properties of the fiber.

What is Pertex® Quantum?

Pertex® Quantum uses extremely fine nylon yarn for the production of very light yet extremely robust and durable fabrics – ideal for Schöffel's high requirements of the materials. Pertex® Quantum is made of the main material nylon (polyamide), which is characterized by its high strength and robustness. It has a very tightly woven waffle structure that provides durability, but also at the same time gives the fabric a special softness. This lightweight fabric also appeals for its windproofness and good moisture management. Furthermore, it is ideal for combining with fillers such as down and wadding, as the lightness of the material allows them to develop their complete fill power and makes them highly compressible, which means they pack down small.

Wearers of Schöffel products can look forward to the maximum wear comfort with Pertex® Quantum. The material is wafer thin, and therefore extremely light. Schöffel generally uses PrimaLoft®, a synthetic alternative to down, as a component in its functional outdoor clothing. PrimaLoft® offers various technologies for insulation and performance materials, some of which Schöffel uses in its winter and summer products. What is PrimaLoft®?

PrimaLoft® is a synthetic insulation material made of polyester. It protects against the cold and is used as a substitute for conventional goose down. Soft, very fine microfibres are used in the production of this material, which are heated and then connected to each other via numerous contact points. The result is a flat mesh structure of fibres and small air chambers that mimics the structure of down. What is the RECCO® rescue system?

The RECCO® rescue system is a highly sophisticated radar technology in which part of the system, the reflector, is integrated in the wearer's outdoor clothing. The counterpart to this is the RECCO® detector, which is used by mountain rescue services in the search for casualties or avalanche victims. The reflector is a small passive transponder, similar to an RFID chip, that is hardly noticeable and is sewn e.g. into the ski clothing. The detector is the active part that is used by the rescue team in the search for injured or buried persons. The detector emits a radial radio signal similar to the light cone of a flashlight. When this signal hits the RECCO® reflector, it sends back an echo and the seeker can identify the direction of the injured party. The closer the detector gets to the reflector, the stronger the signal so localization can follow. According to the manufacturer, the maximum range of the RECCO® hand detector for avalanche detection is about 80 meters on the surface and 20 meters under snow. The RECCO® SAR helicopter detector, which is used by a helicopter, enables the users to search an area of one square kilometer for missing persons in about six minutes, with the helicopter searching a search corridor at a height of about 100 meters and traveling at around 100 km/h.

What is T8 Tech?

T8 Tech consists of billions of tiny fibers that look like a coil. It is a two-component fiber made of PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) and PET (polyethylene terephthalate). Schöffel uses lyocell as an especially ecological alternative to conventional man-made fibres and cotton. The environmentally-friendly, resource-saving production of this material is reflected in the outdoor products and thus is a further step towards sustainability.

What is Lyocell?

Lyocell is a fibre that is made industrially from natural raw materials. It is often based on the raw material wood, such as eucalyptus, oak and birch that is obtained from sustainably managed forests. The main raw material for lyocell is therefore cellulose, and so it can be regarded as a recycled or regenerated fibre. These plants grow without artificial irrigation, and thus the farming saves resources and is kind to the environment. It also requires far less water than does the conventional production of cotton, for instance. The production of lyocell starts with separating the cellulose from soaked wood chips and then mixing it with a biodegradable atoxic solvent. The water is drawn out of this mixture by heating it under vacuum. This dissolves the cellulose and creates a spinning solution. After filtration, the liquid is pressed through spinnerets and into a water bath. This is where the fibres are produced from which the yarn can be spun. The process is called the direct solvent process. The production process is considered far more eco-friendly than that for other regenerated fibres such as viscose due to the environmentally-friendly solvent and closed material cycle. What does Lyocell mean for the consumer?

The durable material offers the optimum moisture management and, thanks to the smooth fibre surface, is ideal for sensitive skin. It is cool in warm conditions and warm in cold conditions. It is able to absorb 50% more moisture than conventional cotton. This results in a higher absorbency of such textiles, which are also extremely easy to look after.

What is UV protection?

The UV protection factor (UPF) states how much longer a person wearing UV protective clothing can stay in the sun without suffering skin damage. The calculation of the protection time is based on what is known as the skin's self-protection time, although this can vary tremendously depending on skin type. As a general rule, every single item of clothing helps to protect the skin beneath it. The denser the material is and the more skin is covered, the greater the garment's protective effect is.

What is Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)?

What does UV protection mean for the consumer?

What is VENTURI?

VENTURI is a closed membrane with no openings, or pores, through which water or the wind are able to penetrate. The VENTURI membrane is situated between the outer fabric and the lining, and is combined with the widest range of outer fabrics to suit its particular use. What is VUELTA?

VUELTA is a technical 2-way stretch techno fabric that feels wonderfully pleasant against the skin. What is wool?

According to the Textile Labeling Act, wool is the soft fleece of a sheep or lamb. Like down, wool is fabulous for regulating heat, which makes it ideal as an insulating material. The wool fibers are curly. Air is trapped in the gaps between the curls, which in turn provides warmth. These air chambers also prevent cold from penetrating from the outside and ensure that moisture is transported away quickly. Furthermore, wool is impervious to moisture, and can in fact absorb it to a high degree to leave the skin feeling dry.

What does wool mean for the consumer?

Maximum wear comfort – that is what wearers of Schöffel wool products can expect. Animal welfare is the main consideration with the wool used for these products. The company only uses wool that does not come from farms that practice mulesing. Mulesing is a method in which a skin fold is removed from below the sheep's tail (usually without anesthesia) to prevent maggots from settling there.
